ABSTRACT

The paper explores imaging techniques for applications in multiphase flow which exploit acoustic principles exploiting ultrasonic sensing.  The discussion notes shortcomings of previous applications in terms of single ultrasonic transducers.  A novel approach for IPT using phased arrays of transducers is described, which promises to enhance dynamic and quality performance.  Advantages of beam forming and synthetic apertures are noted and illustrated through a range of experimental trials. An opportunity to enhance performance by parallelisation through code division multiplexing, commonly used in communication systems, with excitation synthesised as orthogonal pseudo-random sequences is demonstrated.  Experimental trial data is included which indicates performance benefits.
