Data Acquisition System for Online 3D Visualization in Electrical Capacitance Tomography

Electrical capacitance tomography allows to visualize spatial distribution of permittivity in a certain volume. Images are reconstructed from capacitances measured between electrodes placed around the visualized area. It is possible to perform three-dimensional measurements and get three-dimensional volume visualization from one frame using a sensor with electrodes placed in different planes, but in order to achieve acceptable resolution and high frame rate, a 32-electrode sensor with electrodes arranged in three dimensions and a high-performance (able to measure even lower capacitance values than in a classic 2D sensor due to bigger distance between electrodes, but preferably with the same framerate) data acquisition system must be used. 3D visualization could be applied wherever classic approach is used, i.e. in flow monitoring and combustion processes. The advantage of such an approach lies in an enhanced resolution in the longitudinal axis. In this paper a system allowing online 3D visualization called EVT4 is presented. Details of the architecture of EVT4 which enable fast measurements and data processing are described. Software for 3D online image reconstruction is also shown. Reconstruction of 3D images using LBP algorithm from real measurement data acquired with a 32-electrode 3D sensor is presented.
