Metrological perspectives of tomography in civil engineering

ABSTRACT
The metrology of flow multiphase bi- and tri-phasic heterogeneous visco-elastic and elasto-plastic "mixtures" is a fundament topic of interest in academic as well in engineering fields. In numerous applications such as pumping, mixing, moulding, transport, injection and many others measured on- line rheological and tribological data related to flow morphology is of great importance in food and material handling and combustion industrial systems. The flow morphology of concentrated "mixtures" in the field of civil engineering (concretes, sludges, granular materials, mortar, pulverulents...) presents either from rheological and/or from a tribological point of view the problem far from being well- mastered. Moreover, during flow of these multiphase "mixtures", the spatial distribution of constituents is extremely difficult to measure without internal vision which offers tomography. This paper elucidates metrological perspectives of a non-destructive technique that is the tomography applied to multiphase materials and visco-elastic fluids in the civil and mechanical engineering fields. Many industrial applications are discussed by presenting the scientific advances that can provide tomographic metrology and particularly on-line to improve process in connection to self-tuning command in frame of adaptive control strategy.
