Compact calorimeters, based on the newest generation of scintillating crystals and silicon photomultipliers for light detection, and readout by integrated electronics providing energy, time-of- flight and trigger, are of interest not only for basic research, but also for biomedical applications. Two such calorimeters will be described; one is currently being installed and commissioned at the LHC/CERN, while the other one is an R&D project for a detector at the International Linear Collider.
